I needed help restoring my Dad’s chalk portrait done over 65 years ago did not know where to start. I spoke to Scott at FACL and he let me know the best course of action. It’s amazing finding someone so knowledgeable and so helpful.

Thank you so much for everything.

  2. Deidre Duncan says:

I have the Benjamin C. Brown that Greg has emailed you about.
I am 800 miles north of you and I was wondering about shipping.
Actually I will be coming to Southern California in late April and I could get it to you than.

  3. Josh Manwaring says:

I just purchased a painting at auction. It has one of your stickers on the back. It’s Leon Bazille’s The Apple Picker. It’s a beautiful piece. Just wondering what information you can provide me. Your sticker ID# is 18-097

    Thanks in advance!!!

    • Congratulations Josh on winning the bid. Please feel free to call us for a verbal. If you want it the condition report in writing then we’ll discuss that too. 805 564 3438 All my best wishes for a Merry Christmas!

Thanks Scott for today’s long phone call sharing your expertise in protecting public art murals from graffiti. You have an amazing resume of mural restoration and conservation projects. Your recommendations will be a great help as we consider ways to protect historic graffiti from new graffiti vandalism–a bit of irony there for sure!

  5. Blake Smith says:

I had a fire in my cabin which left one of my favorite oil paintings on canvas with smoke damage. I live near Savannah Georgia. Would you be able to recommend or refer me to someone who could restore this painting? Than you.

  6. J Otten says:

white spots have maliciously and generously dripped on my dewey albinson oil painting. I think it’s white paint (it has texture) but don’t really know. can that be fixed, and if so would the expense of the fix be more than the value of the painting. thank you.

  7. Sara Morin says:

    Hi Scott,

Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me about ways in which I can remove paint safely and effectively off of a brick mural. The ideas bounced around were unique and will hopefully resolve the problem!

  8. I had come across Scott Haskin’s contact information while researching how to remove a mural from our church wall. I had seen a video of the process involved in such an undertaking, but needed to have several questions answered before we could even begin to proceed. Scott was not only knowledgeable of the process, but was able to answer every question I had regarding how to have the painting evaluated, the costs involved, and all of the possible variables that might arise throughout the entire process. I now know who to contact, where to connect with a company that can facilitate the removal of the painting should we decide it is worth it to do so. I highly recommend giving Scott a call regarding this or any art conservation questions or projects you may need completed.

      Thanks Pastor David,
Best wishes to you with your project. And thanks for leaving a nice comment.

  9. Stefanie Hassett says:

My dad has a painting done by his great-great aunt in the late 1800’s that I would like to get cleaned for him. It’s very dark from years of exposure. We believe it’s oil on wood, is that something you could/would do? Thank you.

  10. Amanda says:

I was just wondering if u guys authenticate art

    • Scott M. Haskins says:

We offer entry level services and analysis such as IR, UV, pigment ID, stereomicroscopy and research but the attribution must come from an accepted authority on the artist or time period.

  11. Debbie Tabor Hoffman says:

I spoke to Scott today. He was extremely helpful, even with my OCD. He explained what he believes is the next step of identification process I should follow to confirm the date of my 16th century painting. He has remarkable patience. I’m delighted with the call. He gave me renewed direction.

  12. Bradley Mugar says:

Scott was a big help. He shared valuable information with us and helped point us in the right direction. Scott also shed light on incorrect information that is commonly shared with people about protecting art. Thank you so much.

  13. Lisa Gefken says:

I recently purchased (rescued ) a beautiful old painting even though it was damaged. I searched the internet for some info on repairing it and found FACL . After sending off some photos and questions, I was so happy to receive an email and a phone call right away from Scott himself.
He took the time to explain my options and exactly what results I could hope to achieve with each level of repair , as well as what I could expect to spend. He explained several methods with which to get my painting to him, how to carefully package it, and also some recommendations for finding out more information about the piece. I was so impressed with everything about our interaction. I am not a wealthy art collector with a high end project for him, but I was treated like a may as well have been ! What a refreshing and lovely experience. I can’t wait to have my painting restored.

  14. Kerry Cobb says:

    Scott,
Thank you so much for your assistance in pointing me in the right direction. The tapestry I have that needs cleaning is a one of a kind and have never seen anything like it. Your recommendations are greatly appreciated and I will let you know how my search turns out.
    Best Regards,
    Kerry

  15. Barbara Barrett says:

I have inherited a gilt on wood rococo parcour mirror that has been that has been appraised but not been dated more precisely than that general description and also has not been assigned a country of origin. It is rather large, ornate and heavy with an interesting back story (as to how it got to me) – but nothing further back than that. I live in L.A..
    1) Do you think your service would be able to determine anything more precise about the mirror’s origins?
    2) Can such frames be cleaned , (rather than needing restoration i.e., releafing) and is that something that you do?
I have photos that I can send, of course, thank you.

    • Scott M. Haskins says:

Yes, Barbara, we should talk about it. Call me on my mobile 805 570 4140
      Thanks for leaving your comment.

  27. Hi, I am a painter. This summer while setting up a booth at an art festival I damaged one of my large paintings with two small slits (<1" each), and a scrape that has removed some paint. (On michellemarcotte.com it is of Sonoma wine growing region.) I would like to repair the slits and the scrape, although I know this painting will probably not be saleable after the repair (my husband wanted to keep that painting anyway).

I saw your video about carefully matching up the canvas threads. I can do that but would like to know what glue you use to hold the threads together. Also, I have used Grumbacher Spray varnish (high gloss) on the painting. I think I should remove the varnish around the slits and the scrape before repainting it. What solvent removes the Grumbacher spray varnish.

Thank you for any advice you might like to offer. If I ever get famous I will recommend you!!

The other needs restoration and has a couple of old, poorly done, repairs that look very old. The frame also needs repair. I have all the pieces that have come off. I’d be happy to bring the paintings to you in order to get your opinion. Where are you located? Thanks so much.

  34. Gerlinde Kugler says:

    Hello,
I am an artist in Ireland who painted a mural with children at a local school. I used acrylic paint, but there seems to be moisture coming from the back of the wall. This makes it start to flake in certain areas.
There is also a problem where the kids kick balls against the wall and it damages it in certain areas. I have repaired the mural 3 times now over the past 9 years, and sealed it with polybond, which is a medium viscosity homopolymer emulsion of Vinyl Acetate. However, this does not seem to last very long.
If you could email me any information or recommendations as to which varnish or finish would work well I would greatly appreciate it!
I hope to hear from you soon,
    Kind Regards,
    Gerlinde

    • Scott M. Haskins says:

Sorry Gerlinde, I don’t know if any magic varnish that will correct your problems.
      Best wishes,
      Scott

  35. Martha Potter Kim says:

My daughter has one of the lithos that the Giclee Gallery in London ran off of Picasso’s portrait of Francoise Gilot. They used not only the original plate but the original press and paper stock as well. Unfortunately while she was away the roof leaked above it, so now it is stained. Is this type of damage the kind of thing you handle?

    • Scott M. Haskins says:

Hi Martha, It may be something that can be dealt with but I would need to talk to you about it. Can you call our office or send me an email with your number and I’ll call you. Thanks for leaving you comment. TTYS Scott 805 564 3438 faclartdoc@gmail.com

  37. Patricia Holt says:

I called Scott with a question about paper sticking to some of our paintings that had been wrapped and if I should send the paintings to him to remove the paper so we would not damage the paintings. He spent quite a bit of time with me on the phone detailing how we could try to get the paper off ourselves in a way that would be safe for the paintings and of course save us the cost of sending the paintings to him and the cost of his doing this for us. He was entirely professional, forthcoming, and generous with his time and knowledge, even though this conversation would not result in any payments to him. We will use him for any restoration work we may need to do with paintings in the future because of his professionalism and generosity.
